Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing
Experiencing a traumatic event has the potential to be a major contributing factor for developing an addiction. Trauma has a profound effect on the brain, often triggering debilitating mental health symptoms such as anxiety, vulnerability, fear, irrational behaviors and others. These symptoms can collectively be termed PTSD.
Addictions are an attempt to self-medicate/self-regulate these uncomfortable feelings and memories when they become unmanageable. EMDR Therapy is effective in diminishing the emotional charge associated with traumatic events. Because traumatic experiences are stored in the right side, emotional side of the brain, persons who have experienced trauma are often “triggered/” by subconscious stimuli. EMDR is effective in neutralizing the emotional memory of painful events. Lessening of symptoms and increasing feelings of safety and peace.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a treatment process that pinpoints and addresses traumatic experiences that have overwhelmed the brain’s natural coping ability and resilience. There are different phases of EMDR, beginning with a preparation stage and gradually beginning sets of bilateral eye movements. EMDR therapy identifies the physical and emotional sensations associated with the traumatic memory and works to install a positive belief and result in a positive resolution.
